Multi-channel encoders

Multi-channel IPTV encoders: 4, 8 and 16 channels in one rack

When you need more than a handful of channels, one rack-mounted chassis beats a stack of single boxes. Here is what changes with 4, 8 and 16-channel encoders and what to check per channel.

Quick answer

A multi-channel IPTV encoder puts 4, 8, 16 or more encoders in one rack chassis. Each HDMI or SDI input becomes its own channel with its own bitrate and multicast address, all managed from one web interface — the usual choice once you need more than three or four channels.

What a multi-channel encoder is

A multi-channel IPTV encoder combines several encoders in one chassis — commonly 4, 8, 12, 16 or 24 inputs in a 1U or 2U rack-mount case. Each input (HDMI, SDI or composite) becomes its own channel with its own name, bitrate and multicast address, and everything is managed from one web interface.

Single encoders vs one chassis

Several single encoders

  • Cheap to start with one or two channels
  • Each box has its own power adapter and web page
  • Firmware and settings drift between units
  • Messy cabling beyond four boxes

One multi-channel chassis

  • One interface, one firmware, one backup
  • Rack-mounted, often dual power supplies
  • Lower cost per channel from about 4–8 channels up
  • One failure can affect several channels — keep a spare

What to check per channel

  • Independent settings — codec, resolution, frame rate and bitrate for each input.
  • Service name and provider fields so TVs show "News 24" rather than "Service 1".
  • Own multicast address and port per channel (UDP SPTS), or one combined stream (MPTS) if your receivers need it.
  • Sub-streams for phones and tablets, and the chassis's total stream limit.
  • Audio selection — which embedded audio track goes into each channel.
  • Mixed inputs — some chassis take swappable HDMI or SDI cards. See SDI encoders.

Bandwidth planning

On a multicast network, what counts is the total of all channels, not the number of screens.

ChannelsFormatPer channelTotal on the core
41080p H.2645 Mbps≈ 20 Mbps
81080p H.2645 Mbps≈ 40 Mbps
161080p H.2653 Mbps≈ 48 Mbps
1614 × 1080p + 2 × 4K HEVC5 / 20 Mbps≈ 110 Mbps

Gigabit switches carry this easily. The real requirement is IGMP snooping and a querier, so each stream only reaches the ports that ask for it. The full building design is in hotel & business IPTV systems, and price bands in encoder prices.

Frequently asked questions

What is a 4-channel IPTV encoder?

One box with four video inputs (usually HDMI) that encodes four channels at once, each with its own bitrate and stream address. It is a compact choice for bars, small hotels and offices.

When is a rack-mount encoder better than single encoders?

From about four channels upward: one chassis means one power supply, one management interface, one firmware to update and tidy cabling in a 19-inch rack.

Can one input feed several qualities?

Many multi-channel units can output a main and a sub-stream per input (for example 1080p for TVs and 480p for phones). Check the total number of streams the chassis can handle.

Do all channels need the same codec?

No. Good units let you set codec, resolution and bitrate per input, so a 4K channel can use H.265 while the others stay on H.264.
