Plex

Plex with IPTV: adding an M3U playlist to Plex Live TV

Plex can show live IPTV channels next to your films and record them — but only through a tuner proxy. Here is how the setup works and whether it is worth it for you.

Quick answer

Plex does not open M3U playlists directly. Its Live TV & DVR feature expects a tuner, so IPTV users run a small proxy such as xTeVe or Threadfin that presents the M3U playlist and XMLTV guide to Plex as a tuner. It needs Plex Pass and a computer that stays on.

Why Plex needs a proxy

Plex's Live TV & DVR was built for network tuners (antenna tuners such as HDHomeRun). It does not read M3U playlists. A small program — the proxy — reads your IPTV playlist and guide, and presents them to Plex as if they came from a tuner.

Set it up

  1. Check the requirements

A Plex Media Server that stays on, a Plex Pass (Live TV & DVR is a Plex Pass feature), your M3U link and your XMLTV guide link.

  2. Install a tuner proxy

Install an open-source proxy such as Threadfin (the maintained successor of xTeVe) on the same computer or in Docker.

  3. Load your playlist and guide

In the proxy's web interface, add the M3U URL and the XMLTV link, then choose which channels to pass to Plex and map them to the guide.

  4. Add it as a tuner in Plex

Plex → Settings → Live TV & DVR → Set up Plex DVR. Plex detects the proxy as an HDHomeRun-style tuner; if not, enter its address manually.

  5. Use the XMLTV guide

When Plex asks for a guide, choose the option to use an XMLTV file and point it to the proxy's XMLTV output. Finish the channel mapping.

Frequently asked questions

Can Plex play IPTV directly?

No. Plex Live TV expects a tuner device. An M3U playlist works only through a proxy that pretends to be a tuner, such as Threadfin or xTeVe.

Do I need Plex Pass for IPTV?

Yes, for Live TV & DVR. Without it, use a dedicated IPTV player instead.

Is Plex worth it for IPTV?

If you already run Plex and want live channels, recordings and your library in one app, yes. If you just want to watch TV, TiviMate or IPTV Smarters is simpler.

Does it count as one connection?

Each channel being watched or recorded through the proxy uses one connection on your IPTV line.
