Video on demand

What is VOD? Video on demand explained

VOD means watching what you want, when you want. Here is how video on demand works inside an IPTV service and how it differs from live TV and catch-up.

Quick answer

VOD means video on demand: films and series you choose from a library and start whenever you want, with pause, rewind and skip. In IPTV apps it sits in the Movies and Series sections, next to live channels that play on a schedule and catch-up that replays recent shows.

VOD meaning

VOD stands for video on demand. Instead of tuning in when a programme is broadcast, you pick it from a library and press play. You can pause, rewind, skip ahead and stop halfway to continue tomorrow. Netflix is VOD; so is the film section of an IPTV app.

How VOD works in an IPTV app

In IPTV Smarters, TiviMate, XCIPTV and similar apps you will see separate sections: Live TV, Movies (or VOD) and Series. The movies and series sections are the VOD library.

  • Movies are grouped by genre, year or language, often with posters, summaries and ratings.
  • Series are grouped by show, then season, then episode, and the app remembers where you stopped.
  • Subtitles and audio tracks are available on many titles through the player's menu.

With Xtream Codes login the VOD library loads automatically. With an M3U link, VOD may be included in the same list or offered as a separate link — see M3U playlists.

What affects VOD quality

  • The source file — 4K titles need about 25 Mbps; 1080p about 8–10 Mbps.
  • Your player — switching the player engine (for example to ExoPlayer or VLC inside the app) fixes many playback errors.
  • Your connection — VOD can buffer ahead, so short drops matter less than on live TV. How much speed you need.

VOD beyond entertainment

Businesses use VOD too: hotels offer films in rooms, schools publish lessons, churches keep past services online. On the technical side, VOD files are usually prepared once by a transcoder and served over HLS — part of the IPTV headend workflow.

Frequently asked questions

What does VOD stand for?

Video on demand: video you choose and start whenever you want, instead of watching at a scheduled broadcast time.

What is a VOD on Twitch or YouTube?

On streaming platforms, "a VOD" is the saved recording of a past live stream that viewers can replay. Same idea: on demand instead of live.

Is VOD included in an IPTV subscription?

With most services, yes. Ottoceean includes films and TV series in the same login as the live channels, at no extra cost.

Why does VOD buffer less than live TV?

Because the file already exists, the player can download ahead and build a buffer. Live channels can only buffer a few seconds behind real time.
